Role of Standards in Calibration

Instron® Calibration Services provide calibration and verification for your materials testing systems and, where available, will always follow internationally accepted standards, such as ISO or ASTM. There are many standards to cover most aspects of verifying materials testing equipment. 

Why Use Standards? 

One major benefit of following a national or international standard when undertaking a calibration is that it provides best practice methodology that is developed by using expertise gathered from around the world. Acceptability criteria specified in such standards are set and agreed upon by industry, national, and international consensus. 

The benefit of having standards available is that if your calibration provider follows these standards, you are guaranteed that your testing equipment is checked in an internationally approved manner so your results will be accepted across the globe. 

Where standards do not exist, an accredited laboratory will produce their own procedure to cover the work and submit this for approval from their accrediting body, including NVLAP, UKAS, and COFRAC. If a procedure has been approved by an International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) member, you can have the confidence that the work done will be to a high standard. ILAC is an international organization that ensures the maintenance of high standards between accreditation bodies and laboratories across the world.

How Can I Be Confident in the Calibration Provided? 

Our calibration laboratories are accredited and are in full compliance with ISO17025, the internationally recognized standard specifying competency and requirements for testing and calibration laboratories. Laboratories have to formally organize themselves to meet with these stringent requirements and undergo regular auditing by the accreditation bodies to provide evidence of ongoing compliance. 

While the accreditation bodies, such as NVLAP, UKAS, and COFRAC, are nationally based, they all belong to ILAC. 

Why Can’t I Calibrate My Own System and Use My Own Procedures? 

You can calibrate your own system if you have suitable reference devices to verify your equipment. However, it is important that such a type of calibration is suitable for your needs. It is essential to check the small print of your materials testing specifications, contracts, and quality policies as they may dictate calibration requirements and frequencies. Similarly, it is also possible your customers may require a higher level of calibration than is normally feasible to do yourself. For example, your reference equipment should be traceable to a national standard, which means these devices need to be regularly verified to specific standards at a higher level laboratory. Unless you have many systems to calibrate, this can be uneconomical to do yourself.
