Tensile Testing of Composite Laminates using Advanced Video Extensometer (AVE)

This set of testing was done to compare the modulus results seen while testing composite laminate specimens in tension using strain gauges, an Instron clip-on extensometer, and Instron’s Advanced Video Extensometer (AVE) to measure strain.

In order to test the composite laminate specimens, 100kN Hydraulic Wedge grips were used on an Instron 5900 series frame. Using Bluehill Software, data was recorded and displayed from attached strain gauges, a clip-on extensometer, and the AVE simultaneously.  The modulus values that were recorded from the AVE proved to be almost identical to the values seen from the clip-on extensometer as well as the strain gauges.

After performing these tests, we have concluded that for measuring the strain on a composite laminate specimen, the AVE can be used to provide accurate data.
