Tensile Testing of Medical Gloves
The testing of medical gloves is imperative to ensure adherence to specific performance guidelines set forth by the FDA, as well as other international bodies. To evaluate their tensile properties, medical gloves are commonly tested to several standards, including ASTM D6319, ASTM D5250, EN 455-2, and ISO 11193. Today, most gloves are manufactured from latex, nitrile, and vinyl because these materials can withstand high elongations without rupture. This property is especially important in the biomedical industry where maintaining a sterile environment is critical.
The challenges of testing medical gloves:
- Repeatable strain measurement
- Secure gripping of specimens
- Reporting calculations in compliance with the standard
Our solutions:
- Repeatable strain measurement – Due to the delicate nature of the material, the main difficulty with this testing is strain measurement. Typical clip-on methods for strain measurement risk premature failure at the contact point. The AVE 2 Non-Contacting Video Extensometer can precisely measure elongation without extraneous loads or knife-edges to distort results.
- Secure gripping of specimens – Pneumatic grips are recommended to grip the specimens without tearing or inducing slippage. They allow for adjustable gripping pressure and a choice of face dimensions and surfaces.
- Reporting calculations in compliance with the standard – Bluehill® Universal testing software has an advanced pre-built method available for testing in accordance with EN455-2(2015), helping to ensure compliance.
It is important to review the appropriate standard to fully understand the test setup, procedure, and result requirements.
