ASTM D2256 Tensile Properties of Yarns
This standard specifies the method for determining the tensile properties of yarns using the single-strand method, and helps determine the quality of the raw material while aiding in quality control of the finished product.
To determine tensile strength and elongation at break, specimens are clamped in the appropriate grips and pulled at a constant rate until failure occurs. The test results can be used to determine the tenacity, modulus, and strength of the material. Typically used for these tests are single column or dual column tabletop universal testing machines that are configured with capstan or pneumatic cord and yarn grips, which are highly effective at reducing clamping stress applied to the specimen and providing essential specimen alignment. Using Bluehill® software, users are able to easily control the test, acquire data, and prepare test reports.
Instron's pneumatic cord and yarn grips offer different styles of interchangeable clamping blocks, including specialized blocks for high denier Aramid fibers.
The challenges of testing to this standard are:
- Reporting calculations in compliance with the standard
- Specimen gripping
Instron's Solution:
- Customizable calculations in Bluehill® software allow for quick and easy results that can be displayed in a test report
- Instron pneumatic cord and yarn grips are well-suited to gripping nearly all types of yarn for this test while maintaining high throughput
It is important to review ASTM D2256/D2256M-10 to fully understand the test setup, procedure, and results requirements.
2714 Series Pneumatic Cord and Yarn Grips (2714-005)
Pneumatic cord and yarn grips provide a convenient method for clamping fiber, cord, yarns and fine wires to reduce the problem associated with testing these materials. A specially designed horn with a smooth finish and a contoured surface with a graduated cam allows for easy loading and a stress reduced clamping area on the specimen. The clamping mechanism can be activated either automatically or through a foot switch. This allows hands-free grip operation enabling the specimen to be held with both hands, for easy loading. Pneumatic cord and yarn grips provide selectable clamping force to accommodate different materials and excellent follow-up action which compensates for decay of the holding force due to specimen creep.
