ISO 37:2011 Tensile Stress-Strain Properties of Rubber, Vulcanized or Thermoplastic
ISO 37:2011 describes a method for the determination of the tensile stress-strain properties of vulcanized and thermoplastic rubbers. The standard has two allowable specimen geometries. The standard describes straight dumbbell specimens as well as ring shaped specimens. The properties which can be determined are tensile strength, elongation at break, stress at a given elongation, and yield point. The measurement of stress and strain at yield applies only to some thermoplastic rubbers and certain other compounds.
The challenges of testing to this standard are:
- Accurate strain measurement at high elongations
- Secure gripping of varying specimens
- Reporting calculations in compliance with the standard
Instron Solution:
- Accurate Strain Measurement – Advanced strain solutions for contacting and non-contacting strain measurement which can meet or exceed the accuracy requirements of ISO 37. A non-contacting solution like the Standard Video Extensometer (SVE 2) is ideal for all specimen types while contacting solutions such as the XL Long travel extensometer and AutoX750 are more specifically suited for robust specimens
- Secure Gripping of Varying Specimens – Varying gripping techniques from Pneumatic Side Action Grips to Mechanical Self-tightening Grips to ensure no slippage occurs despite specimen thinning
- Reporting Calculations in Compliance with the Standard – Instron Bluehill testing software has advance pre-built methods available with pre-configured elastomer specific calculations helping
It is important to review ISO 37 in order to fully understand the test setup, procedure, and results requirements.
SVE 2 | Non-Contacting Video Extensometer
The newest Standard Video Extensometer (SVE 2) is a high-performance, non-contacting extensometer that is ideally suited for everyday applications such as rubber, soft plastics, elastomers and other materials with high strain to failure.
